Daytona Beach The Story: Part 3 Daytona Beach's heyday began around 1910 with the construction of the Beach Street Central Business District.Many of the existing buildings on Beach Street were built during this period. Famous department stores like Woolworth and Kress, moved in during this time.It was a time of growth and convenience as goods could finally be found in Daytona Beach without having to travel to Jacksonville.Neighborhoods surrounding downtown began to flourish during these years, as well. Uptown, Old Daytona , Kingston and beachside neighborhoods like Ocean Dunes were developed. Once the Daytona Beach migration began a number of different entertainment venues began to open, including movie theaters, the Burgoyne Casino and the gardens along RiverfrontPark. Bridges were built to connect the growing residential and commercial needs of the beachside Traveling over the Orange Ave, Volusia or MainStreetBridge was a convenient way to travel to the regular speed trials that were happening on Daytona Beach.Speed became the name of the game on our hard packed sand beaches.Sir Malcolm Campbell and others became famous as they tested the limits of the new automobile to see how fast they could possibly go. It was also during these years that the cities of Seabreeze, Daytona and Daytona Beach merged to become one city, Daytona Beach. The Flagler railroad empire continued south to West Palm, Miami and Key West during these years which began to give Daytona Beach competition as the southern resort haven.Campaigns were developed to combat the growing number of Northerners who traveled to Miami Beach.One of the more famous campaigns especially during the years before air conditioning was 'Daytona Beach- It's Cooler Here'.
